Ryan’s full mouth dental implant story is a fascinating one. Ryan is a 41-year-old hard working craftsman, turned YouTuber. Two years ago Ryan found himself at a crossroads with his teeth. For so long he had become accustomed to putting off much needed dental treatment until he could no longer put it off without potentially severe consequences. Ultimately, he made the commitment to do something about it. He received a full set of dental implant supported teeth for his upper and lower jaws. If you are considering dental implants, you can learn a lot from Ryan’s story.
Ryan has been refinishing furniture using both paint, and stain and glaze since 2012, and he’s really good at it. His passion to share his experiences led him to create a YouTube channel – That Shabby Guy – where he routinely uploads several videos to share his skillsets with his audience.
So when Ryan found himself dealing with very bad and painful teeth conditions, sharing his experience of addressing this problem came natural.
Ryan was missing several teeth, and his remaining teeth were in very bad condition.
“My teeth started getting worse and worse because I had a fear of going to the dentist,” Ryan shared with Paying for Dental Implants. “When I had infections, I found out that if I went to the dentist, they would give me antibiotics and pain medication. They would have me call and schedule to get it fixed later on. By that time I wasn’t in pain anymore so I wouldn’t go back. [Which] was just making things worse.”
Ryan’s back teeth were in such bad shape that eating something even as soft as a pea would cause such excruciating pain that it made him feel like he was literally biting a rock.
At this point, the pain and discomfort were palpable. The level of pain outweighed Ryan’s fear of going to the dentist, by far. “The pain was making my life to the point where I wasn’t functioning properly,” Ryan shared.
He knew something had to be done which would require seeing a dentist until the problem was solved. After visiting the dentist, Ryan was told that several of his teeth would need root canals and crowns. If he wanted to save his teeth, there was no way around it.
After learning about the full mouth dental implant procedure, Ryan was attracted by the fact that in a few short appointments, he could be done with fixing his mouth.
Fewer appointments for dental implants meant minimizing the repeated anxiety that would be rehashed each time he had to return to the dentist office to repair each of his remaining natural teeth.
Ryan decides that dental implants would be the best solution for him. While dentures would have been a lot cheaper, denture wearers face several challenges over time including jawbone loss, loose dentures, difficulty chewing, gaging, reduced tasting sensation, low self-esteem and other side effects.
Receiving an All-on-4™ implant procedure meant that he could resolve his failing teeth situation cheaper and faster than what it would cost to fix his remaining infected teeth using traditional root canals, crowns and bridgework.
The cost of an All-on-4 procedure like the one Ryan received — for both jaws — will typically cost between $35,000 to $60,000 total. Most commonly, patients will finance this procedure over several years, much like purchasing a car. To begin the process, his surgeon administered local anesthetic to make Ryan nice and numb to avoid any feelings of pain. He also used a form of oral sedation called Halcion. The Halcion would place Ryan in a very relaxed state, or even to sleep at times during the procedure.
The implant surgeon proceeded to remove Ryan’s remaining teeth. Four dental implants were placed in his upper jaw and four in his lower jaw. Following the dental implant surgery, Ryan was sent back to his hotel to rest for the evening.
The following morning, Ryan returned to the dental office to have a complete set of provisional teeth anchored to his dental implants. When he left the office on the second day, he had stable teeth in place.
He would wear these temporary teeth for only seven days until his final teeth were ready for delivery. With this Done-In-One procedure, Ryan was able to receive his final set of teeth in exactly seven days.
No one is more proud of their new implant smile more than Ryan. He has 100 percent confidence in his teeth and isn’t afraid to show it.
Ryan was instructed to follow a soft diet for three months following his surgery. This give the implants the best opportunity to heal. During this healing period, below are a few foods generally acceptable to eat:
Eggs | Smoothies | Ground Turkey |
Oatmeal | Bananas/Berries | Ground Beef |
Pasta | Steamed Vegetables | Fish |
“It’s been two and a half years since I got it done,” said Ryan. “This summer… While on vacation I was just chit-chatting with some guys, and as soon as I smiled, the guys were like, ‘Dude, your teeth are so straight, how the [heck]’… That was the first time I didn’t tell someone they were fake [lol].”
Since receiving his new dental implant smile, Ryan is able to eat whatever he desires. Popcorn is among his favorites that previously, was just too painful to chew with his bad teeth.
Another side-benefit Ryan discovered about this procedure is that he no longer has teeth sensitivity to very cold foods. He now enjoys eating ice cream and even occasionally chumping down on some frozen strawberries.
“This procedure is definitely worth the cost; it’s life changing!” proclaims Ryan. “You don’t have to hide your smile anymore. You can eat whatever the hell you want. I look younger. I’m 41 now but I still have people telling me… ‘I thought you were 25; your teeth are so white!’ It’s a huge confidence booster!”
When it came to the health of Ryan’s teeth, he had reached a point of no return. Even his severe dental phobia was not enough to stop him from fixing his problem for once.
Repairing his six infected teeth and replacing his missing teeth would come with an enormous cost. This would also require several dental visits.
Ryan decided to receive a full mouth dental implant procedure instead. At $21,000 per upper and lower jaw, the cost for this procedure was less than it would have cost him to repair his natural teeth and replace his missing teeth.
In seven days, Ryan had his final dental implant supported teeth. He was instructed to be on a modified soft diet for three months until the implants were healed. Ryan insists his dental implants changed his life. He now has a million-dollar smile and can eat whatever food he wants.
